ALMSHOUSE CHARITIES
The people in need for whom our almshouse charities cater can be of any age or from a particular area. Some housing is provided specifically for older people and some for other groups such as vulnerable adults or even younger people.

WHAT ARE ALMSHOUSES?
Almshouses are owned by a charity in perpetuity - there is no 'Right to Buy'. They are managed by voluntary trustees with professional services provided by partners. The Trustees are responsible for the repair and maintenance of the properties. 'Rents', known as WMC or Weekly Maintenance Contributions, are usually set below local market rent levels. Note: Prospective residents may have to meet certain eligibility criteria eg come from a specified area or be of a certain age although it is always worth enquiring.
FUTURE OF ALMSHOUSES
Almshouses have always been and will always be there to provide a home for people in need. The category of the person in need and eligible to be selected for a place in the almshouses is often specified under the terms of the charity when the charity was established.
Almshouses are created as homes for people in need, in perpetuity. This means that the trustees of the charity have a responsibility to manage and maintain the property for the residents who do not acquire rights to buy the property unlike other forms of social housing.
